About Bukit Tawau Forest Reserve

Bukit Tawau Forest Reserve is located near Tawau in the Malaysian state of Sabah on the island of Borneo. Covering a large area of tropical lowland and hill forest, the reserve encompasses an elevation range that reaches up to 1,200 meters, with Bukit Tawau being the highest point. The forest is a significant conservation area in the region, known for its rich biodiversity, including rare and endemic flora and fauna such as dipterocarp trees, orangutans, gibbons, and an array of bird species. The terrain is characterized by steep hills, dense undergrowth, and numerous streams, making it an excellent destination for experienced hikers and nature lovers seeking less commercialized rainforest experiences. The reserve was initially protected to preserve its valuable timber resources and watershed but increasingly serves as a site for conservation activities and field research. Visitors come primarily for trekking, wildlife spotting, and jungle trekking expeditions, which include challenging routes up Bukit Tawau itself. The forest also provides opportunities for birdwatching, with species such as hornbills and trogons frequently sighted. Due to its ecological importance and relatively remote access, the area is less developed for large-scale tourism, preserving a wild atmosphere and offering an immersive natural experience. Adventurers visiting Bukit Tawau Forest Reserve will find a lush, vibrant environment filled with natural sounds, diverse plant life, and excellent chances to spot wildlife in their natural habitat.
